work in progress

I’ve been crazy busy this week at work. After spending 9 or 10 hours on the computer doing illustrations, all I care to do is eat dinner and then watch an hour or two of mindless TV before bed.

The last thing I want to do is sketch more.

I can’t believe I said that but it does happen occasionally.

Here are some value sketches I did last Sunday. I’m working from old black and white photos. Two are of me. One is of my grandma, her sister and kids. I like working with black and white photos…it’s easier to see the values already. And I get to choose my own colors!

Next week, I’m only working on Monday and Tuesday, so I’m lining up some things to paint on my days off. I’ve decided to work large (well, 11” x 14”…that’s LARGE for me.) So I’ll either end up with some nice paintings or lots of scrap paper.

That’s how it goes. Some day I want to work on full-size watercolor paper. But that inner voice is always warning me – “You don’t need that much scrap paper.” Sigh.

Just curious about those of you who paint…what size do you normally work?

  1. Wow, you have been busy! What long hours youve been working, no wonder you have had enough. I love your sketches Sue, they are so narrative. I also like to work from black and white photos for the same reason as you. Its like taking and image and then bringing it to life :)

    1. Still busy this week, which means my blog is neglected. Not much longer, I hope.

Yes, I love working from B&W photos. You're exactly right about bringing them to life!

  2. What a great idea to take the scenes from the past and kind of translate them into the present with your lovely sketching. So it seems a little bit like the past suddenly becomes the present. It's a kind of a leap in time.
I hope you could understand me because sometimes it's a bit difficult to explain my emotions in English.

    1. Your English is wonderful! I know exactly what you mean.

I enjoy painting pictures of my relatives. Since most of them are gone now, it is my way of letting them know I will not forget them.

And looking at old photos of myself...it's like I still remember THAT day exactly.
