R&R in key west

We did a long weekend getaway last weekend to Key West, Florida. There is nowhere else on earth like Key Weird!! I love it there.

I’ve been there 3 or 4 times before and it’s always a treat. But here was a first for me. I drew in public!! GASP!! Well, sort of in public. I drew every day at the hotel pool. Baby steps, you know.

I loved this old bathtub being used as a planter!

Here is a drawing of my husband reading on his i-pad. I started drawing his legs, then he covered up with a towel because of the heat. That’s the downside of drawing people. They move or switch positions!

Like this guy. The fellow on the left was easy. He just listened and nodded his head a lot. But the guy on the right talked with his hands!! His position changed every 2 seconds.

Here’s a study of the hibiscus growing nearby.

Two women reading by the pool.

Another interesting planter -- a big blue foot!

A couple people knew that I was drawing and didn’t seem to be bothered. I think if they had stopped to watch me, I would probably freeze up!! Anybody have any tips on overcoming the fear of drawing in public??

  1. Aren't you the lucky one! Lived here 13 years and still haven't made it to Key West!
Tips for drawing in public......the more you do it the more you won’t care if anyone notices, you just get lost inthe doing.

  2. Love your sketches. The style is very nice. I think you are very brave to sketch in public, but if I could do that well, I guess I wouldn't be so hesitant to try it.

  4. I don't think you need to worry about sketching in public... your work is brilliant. They are so loose and I'm sure if the subjects took a peek over your shoulder they would be thrilled.
I can do neither... sketch loosely or in public, so I'm in awe of your work ;D

  8. I love your beautiful "baby-steps"! Your husband looks great and also the hibiscus as well as the people at the pool. I also love to see the summer colors since we already have autumn here. And I admire you for drawing in public. I would love to do it but I'm too afraid of it.

  10. great sketches for your first time out in public ;-) I love how people illustrate their lives that way, and sure wish I could do it. I have no tips, I freeze when people watch me when I'm creating ....
