owl prowl

We live near Hobb’s State Park in Arkansas. The park frequently has educational programs that we like to attend. Last weekend, we went on an Owl Prowl to look for the Barred owl.

Now I’m not much of a nature person, I admit. I love bird watching…out my backdoor. But I’m game for trying new things now and then. So when my husband suggested this, I thought “Sure. What the heck.”

The Barred owl’s call is similar in cadence to “Who cooks for you. Who cooks for you all.” Take a listen here and see if you can’t hear it in the owl’s call.

The leader for the Owl Prowl said that we southerners sometimes have trouble with calling the Barred owl as we are tempted to say, “Who cooks for y’all.” So, you northerners may have more luck!

poetic

I doodled this but I’m not the author. I wish I were this clever.

Today is my Friday. I love saying that on Tuesday! I’ve been crazy busy at work so that I could take off extra time. Hence, the reason for the lack of blog posts lately.

Hope everyone has a super Thanksgiving.

P.S. be sure to check out They Draw & Cook for some super Thanksgiving recipes. One of mine is featured today!

umbrellas

Where do the days go? I was out of town last weekend. It was my grandma’s 97th birthday. 97…Wow! I hope I live that long. She still lives in the same house she’s lived in since the late 40’s. She loves to make and sell craft things…so she has extra money for playing Bingo! I just love her.

Monday night was catch up on things I should have done on the weekend. Last night I worked on an acrylic painting. Not ready to share that yet. I still haven’t gotten the hang of acrylics. Not to my liking anyway.

Here’s a little watercolor I made of a rainy, fall afternoon.

Well, it started out as an imaginary animal…

…but then it took a turn.

I drew his eye first. Then what was going to be a beak, turned into a nose.

Then the rest just sort of emerged.

I’ve named him Gus. That’s who he looks like. Well, I think so anyway.

My apologies to anyone named Gus.

cats, cats and more cats

Even though we had really nice weather this weekend, I found myself sketching and painting the day away in my little studio. The hours just seem to melt away when I’m in there.

I did lots of cat doodles. Like the little houses I sketched a month or so ago, I have quite a collection of cats. Hard to believe, I know!!

Here are a few.

You know those great Chinese guardian lions that keep buildings safe? Well, we have these 3 cats placed in the entry hallway. Not quite the same, but so far they’ve done their job well.

Here’s a little cat that hangs from the light in my office. Most of the time, I look up and see his little belly. But I’ve included a little doodle of his smiling face, too.

Looking forward to the weekend. Whew…busy week.

Hope to spend all day in the studio tomorrow. Even though I should be doing some house cleaning and yard work. That will just have to wait!

imaginary animals

This month’s theme at Sketchbook Challenge is “imaginary animals.” Excellent theme! Of course, mine will most likely have a cat feel to them.

This sketch is based on a statue I picked up somewhere on vacation. It’s a whacky two-legged cat. Sort of.
